Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi is the most famous singer from Zimbabwe you’ve never heard of (he’s released over 40 albums). Check out the videos below and see if you’re not instantly won over by his music, as I was. The first track is a solo performance of Neria, a tender ballad about the strength of women. The additional tracks, Ndakuvara and Raki, are studio recordings with a full band – listen to the way Tuku’s gravely voice blends with the bright background vocals, as well as the lovely sound of his native language, Shona.
By the way, I learned about today’s artist listening to a fantastic internet radio station called Radio Paradise – if you love diverse and interesting music, you should check it out.
