Song of the Day #61 – Radiohead

What makes a great live performance video? Maybe it’s easier to answer the opposite question. Here are some things I don’t like:

  • Trying too hard: overproduced, slick “official videos” that look like a bad Hollywood movie
  • Sloppy: cell phone footage straight from the mosh pit, with jittery video and bad audio
  • Boring: music track set to a still image of the CD cover art

Today’s song, Karma Police, by Radiohead, is a great example of a well produced live performance video. It’s raw, intimate and spontaneous. The camera work and audio quality are excellent and it’s a one-take performance – nothing overproduced about it. Just an awesome band doing what they do best. This video makes you feel like you’re right there in the room with the rest of the crowd, which, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there. (Trivia buffs: name the company that popularized that slogan and to what it referred.)
