Song of the Day #16 – Patti Smith

On April 17, 1976, I was a sophomore in high school, partying with my friends, as I did nearly every weekend. Someone’s parents might have been away that night. There was undoubtedly much talk of sports and girls. Alcohol, cigarettes and certain other substances might have been consumed. The only thing I can remember for certain about that particular evening was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, who gave a performance I never forgot. From the audacious first line, “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine”, I was hooked. The performer was Patti Smith and the song was “Gloria”, from her amazing debut record “Horses”.
