Today’s song is Where Do My Bluebird Fly? by Swedish singer/songwriter Kristian Matsson, better known by his performing name, The Tallest Man on Earth. Kristian artfully combines his raspy voice with a fingerpicking guitar style and original folk music. The result is almost mystical, and reminiscent of another mysterious fingerpicking minstrel, Devendra Banhart (see Song of the Day #15). Vocally, I also hear a striking resemblance to two other excellent folksingers, Steve Forbert and Marcus Mumford (lead singer of Mumford and Sons).
The production values on this video are outstanding, courtesy of KEXP in Seattle. At the end of the clip, Cheryl Waters, my favorite DJ, mentions that this performance left her speechless and I couldn’t agree more.
